Enjoy an enchanted, plastic-free Halloween
Believe it or not, we’ve arrived at that time of year again when pumpkins are ready for harvesting, shops are full of ghoulish goodies and we’re all looking forward to the most spooktacular night of the year – and no, we’re not talking about the Strictly Halloween special (though I, for one, am already excited for that!).
For those of us who are making a conscious effort to reduce our consumption of single-use plastics, Halloween can be particularly tricky to navigate. Commercial decor tends to centre around plastic props, treat buckets and disposable costumes, so we wanted to share some of our top tips for low-waste festivities.
Get crafty!
Halloween fabric is a fantastic way to get into the spirit of the season by conjuring up creations that are bursting with spookish charm. And the good news is, you don’t have to be a consummate crafter to make some simple decorations and props you can reuse year after year.
No-sew bunting is a fantastic project to do with the children. All you need is some good-quality fabric of your choice, bias tape or binding and a hot-glue gun (if you haven’t got one already, these are such a handy tool to invest in!). Make a paper or card triangle to use as your guide, then fold your fabric in half (so you get two triangles from every cut) and use fabric scissors or pinking shears to cut out your flags. Simply glue them onto your tape as double-sided pennants and it’s job done!
Halloween cushions make an ideal sewing project for a beginner, or if you’re an ambitious or experienced crafter there are all kinds of more complex Halloween projects you could take on! How about making some trick-or-treat bags for the kids to collect their goodies in? These can be reused year after year, making them a great alternative to plastic buckets. And you never know, they may even become a treasured family heirloom!
Another idea is to make some themed face masks for friends and family. Or go all out and use your Halloween fabric to make an outfit that can be worn by your little one this year, then handed down to a friend or family member with a younger child who can use it next year.
