Enjoy an enchanted, plastic-free Halloween

Enjoy an enchanted, plastic-free Halloween

Believe it or not, we’ve arrived at that time of year again when pumpkins are ready for harvesting, shops are full of ghoulish goodies and we’re all looking forward to the most spooktacular night of the year – and no, we’re not talking about the Strictly Halloween special (though I, for one, am already excited for that!).

For those of us who are making a conscious effort to reduce our consumption of single-use plastics, Halloween can be particularly tricky to navigate. Commercial decor tends to centre around plastic props, treat buckets and disposable costumes, so we wanted to share some of our top tips for low-waste festivities.

Get crafty!

Halloween fabric is a fantastic way to get into the spirit of the season by conjuring up creations that are bursting with spookish charm. And the good news is, you don’t have to be a consummate crafter to make some simple decorations and props you can reuse year after year.

No-sew bunting is a fantastic project to do with the children. All you need is some good-quality fabric of your choice, bias tape or binding and a hot-glue gun (if you haven’t got one already, these are such a handy tool to invest in!). Make a paper or card triangle to use as your guide, then fold your fabric in half (so you get two triangles from every cut) and use fabric scissors or pinking shears to cut out your flags. Simply glue them onto your tape as double-sided pennants and it’s job done!

Halloween cushions make an ideal sewing project for a beginner, or if you’re an ambitious or experienced crafter there are all kinds of more complex Halloween projects you could take on! How about making some trick-or-treat bags for the kids to collect their goodies in? These can be reused year after year, making them a great alternative to plastic buckets. And you never know, they may even become a treasured family heirloom!

Another idea is to make some themed face masks for friends and family. Or go all out and use your Halloween fabric to make an outfit that can be worn by your little one this year, then handed down to a friend or family member with a younger child who can use it next year.

Halloween Skirt by Belle and Boo

If you’re searching for fabric for your Halloween crafts, check out the latest arrivals in our collection of fabric designs. Our Halloween fabrics all feature original illustrations in our signature style, which gives them a sense of charm and nostalgia and makes them a slightly softer take on Halloween themes – ideal for younger children or those who are especially sensitive to the more frightening side of the festivities.

Trick or Treat is a brightly coloured Halloween fabric printed with Belle, Boo and friends along with characterful pumpkins on a starry night-sky background. Elsewhere in the collection you’ll find our Pumpkin Party fabric, which features Boo Bunny in a colourful pumpkin patch, and our popular Halloween Fabric, which is adorned with charming illustrations of Belle, Boo and friends in spooktacular fancy dress.

The three fabrics complement each other perfectly, making them a lovely combination for a bunting or patchwork project. And, like all our fabrics, they’re 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton, so not only are they a more eco-responsible choice, but they wash and wear beautifully and are super soft and kind to skin.

Reusable Halloween decorations

If you want to add a little Halloween fun to your home but are keen to avoid throwaway items, you’ll love our reusable wall stickers and art prints.

Featuring seasonal illustrations of our best-loved characters, our self-adhesive decals are printed onto an award-winning woven fabric that sticks to virtually any flat surface in the home and will even wrap around corners. The innovative fabric won’t shrink or curl, and after Halloween you can remove the stickers, pop them back on their paper and store them away ready to reuse next year… and the year after… and even the year after that! And we promise you’ll never be left with a sticky mess or residue on your walls.

Halloween wall stickers for children

There are three imagination-capturing designs to choose from: Halloween Belle and Boo Wall Stickers, Halloween Ellis and Easy Wall Stickers and Boo’s Halloween Wall Stickers. They’re all incredibly easy to apply and your children will love getting involved with adding the costumes to the characters and the faces to the pumpkins!

Our Halloween art prints also make lovely additions to your home at this time of year, whether displayed in frames or simply added to a shelf along with some autumnal props. And if your little ones enjoy sending snail-mail, our Halloween Parade Postcard is the perfect way to wish friends and family a happy Halloween. They make brilliant party invitations too!
